Selection of Adhesives for Polyurethane Rubber Rollers

Rubber rollers are cylindrical products made of rubber that has been vulcanized, possessing sufficient surface viscosity. Rubber rollers are mainly used in papermaking, dyeing, printing, and grain processing, making the choice of adhesives particularly important.
According to the theory of adhesive coordination bonds, polymer materials with high molecular polarity can form coordination bonds and van der Waals forces with the surfaces of metal materials, resulting in a strong bond between the materials and the metal. Coating the roller core with a primer (adhesive) containing multiple isocyanate groups has a good effect on enhancing adhesion. This is because polyisocyanates can react with polyurethane materials to form a rigid bonding layer, integrating with the iron roller core. The isocyanate groups, phenyl rings, and carbamate groups in the bonding layer interact with the iron atoms and their oxides on the surface of the metal roller, forming chemical bonds or subvalent bonds (such as hydrogen bonds), resulting in a high adhesion strength between polyurethane and metal. Polyurethane rubber rollers have a bright appearance, a fine and smooth colloidal surface, and good chemical properties, making them suitable for various types of inks and printing methods. They have special resistance to solvent components in various inks, fountain solutions, and cleaning agents. Polyurethane rubber rollers are also suitable for UV ink rollers and varnish rollers, particularly exhibiting good solvent resistance to boiling water, diesel, gasoline, lubricating oil, kerosene, toluene, alcohol, and saline solutions. However, they are not resistant to acetone, ethyl acetate, and strong acids and bases.
